Everglades 2006

The Everglades beckon in December 2006 ....

Earlier, storms had swept across the vast wilderness...

distant thunder rumbled still.

Alligators languish lazily in the late afternoon heat...

Birds extended a greeting or ignored us completely.

Additional Trip Information:
*Everglades National Park - http://www.nps.gov/ever/

Note: Lodging in the park was destroyed during the 2005 hurricane season. Camping is available (no electricity or hot showers). Area lodging (Homestead) is limited, so we stayed in Key Largo and travelled each day to and from the park. The drive was approximately one hour each way. The hotel was the Marriott Key Largo Bay Resort at http://www.marriottkeylargo.com/. We entered the park each day via the Ernest Coe Visitor Center entrance in Homestead. The Center has an excellent display and video. Many hiking trails are close to that area. Also, we recommend travelling from there to Flamingo and taking a boat tour, if available.
